My XS400 has always had a bit of an annoying problem. When starting cold, it will not fire for a few seconds usually, but sometimes upt to 20-30 seconds, on the right cylinder. The left seems to fire just fine. It'll run, then the right will chime in after a few stumbles and after that never miss a beat.

I have rebuilt the carbs, they are as clean as a whistle. I have kick only and am pretty certain my battery is in good condition.

Any suggestions?

i'd check compression on both sides, should be 140 psi-ish

do the valve gaps, timing and check the carb settings on the dodgy side.

I hate to say this, but I speak from personal experience- this happened to me. You only think your carbs are completely clean. Those tiny passages are stubborn and they have a profound impact on starting and idling. Boil them or have them ultrasonically cleaned, set the floats, and sync them and I think you'll find the problem mysteriously has vanished.
