First bike and I need help.

Just bought my first motorcycle and it's an 81 xs 400. When I bought it was running fine after riding it for a week it no longer starts. I've pulled the carbs off and everything looks clean. What else should I look at and do to get it back up and running?

Make sure you are getting spark and fuel.

And when you say looks clean did you take them apart and blow through all the holes and remove the jets? Mine looked clean but pulled them apart and cleaned all the pieces then put back together. Don't forget to check the fuel bowl height also.

Battery is charged. That's what I initially thought so I let it sit on a trickle charger all night got up the next morning went to warm it up and it started and then it just died and couldn't start it again.

Could be a fuel issue...carbs have to be cleaned even if the look clean. While you're at it install an in-line fuel filter.
Could be spark/electrical...check for spark, there could be a bad safety switch/relay that kills the ignition.
Or it could be reg/rec related so check if the battery is getting charged whilst running the bike.
