Headers question

Apparently the '81's have welds that hold the muffler to the headers. I could hack it off, but if I decide not to, does anyone know if the pre '81 headers will bolt up correctly?

77-79 headers are not welded to the mufflers and would fit an 81.

You could cut off the muffler back a little from where the weld is and grind off the weld,then clamp on the new muffler.That way,you wouldn't loose any length of the pipe. lha

Yep, that's what my son did when he replaced the mufflers on his '81. Worked fine.

I found a pair of '78 headers. Will those bolt up using the hardware from the '81 or do I need '78 flanges, nuts, etc.?

they should, I don't see why not.
