I found that 1980 XS400 had a non-functioning kick start. I removed the cover and found the springs and gear removed and the kickstart shaft resting on broken journal. As I removed the shaft I noticed another piece of the journal was cracked and as I reached for it, it fell to the bottom of the engine. I have dragged and pulled trying to locate and drag out the piece. If I remove the botttom pan is it logical to think that I might find it on the screen? I would rather not crack the cases if I don't have to...I am not experienced with motorcycle repairs....yet.
