I'm new to the bike world, I bought me a '77 xs400. I've been riding it around the neighborhood to try and get used to it... The bike will start on the first kick every time when its cold, after riding it for a few minutes if I kill it, it won't start back up. Am I doing something wrong or could there be a problem with the bike itself.

thanks for your time!

Starts nicely again once it has cooled down?
May be running too rich.

Looks like it still has the stock exhaust? Just painted black?
Pilot screws should be about 1.5 turns out after gently seating them all the way in.
If it's running stock intake and exhaust that should get you close.

The other perpetually appropriate suggestion: cleaned the carbs lately?
