I went to order new mixture screws and float valves and hit a roadblock. None of my stuff looks like BS34 stuff, but rather 38 stuff. I thought that all our 400's came with BS34's? Maybe a PO swapped them?

Are there any major differences in the carbs? I may look for new bodies since both have mixture screw tips broken in them. I've already bought new jets to accompany my pods and exhaust so I'd rather not buy a new set

Carbs are way more expensive than jets and other internal bits. Photos would allow us to answer your question with certainty.

Did you try to remove the broken tips?

What would you like a picture of? Mixture screw is non- oring type, looks exactly like the ones on mikesxs and 650direct for bs38 carbs. Same for the float needles, I have the non-clip type with the threaded base. Has the spring loaded tip in the middle of the needle

Here's a picture of my stuff

After thinking about how my carbs look(Bs34's) and a few google images... I don't think those are bs34's. The hole near the vacuum chamber on top is what makes me think this. I can't find a decent BS38 side pic to compare it against though. Could always measure? :p

Those are 77-79 bs34's and looks like your needle has broken off in the carb.

Thanks tips :p

The other thing I'm planning to order is the float bowl needles. Mine look like this...

Mikesxs has two listed that look like this. One for bs38 and the other for 70-71 xs650. Any idea which one will work in mine?

Well after a good 45 minutes of reading search results and cross referencing part numbers from different sites, I figured out that the float valve for 78-79 xs400's is 48-5019 listed on Mikesxs for bs38

:)
