So I recently rebuilt my carbs agin with an eBay kit. The kit came with mixture screws. When I was disassembling the carbs I found the mixture screws were different in each carb, one short one long. The new kit came with two longer styles so figured I was in luck, put it back together and the only way I could get a good idle was with them 7-8 turns out which took all of the tension off the spring. Comparing the longer to the shorter would explain hopefully why I have to adjust them so far out. My question is, which is correct for an 82 400 heritage special? The main jet needles that came with the kit were also the adjustable style so I'm thinking I got an earlier carb kit. Am I going to have to searching for another short needle?

This is what the 80-82 sohc carb idle mix screw should look like. Post some pics of your carbs so we can see what style you have. Some of the "kits" out there have bad or wrong idle mix scews.
