Introduction/ first build

Hi every one ,a new guy here. Alot of killer bikes on here!A while back I was given a 79 xs 400 and i just started to work on it. The first order of buisness is to get it up and running, as the former owner did a bit of a butcher job on the electrical harness. I want to make it a kickstart only and found quite a few diagrams that will help,question is will i need a battery (even a very small one) or will this thing be able to fire up and run just the basic electrical componits off just the stator? Will post pics soon of the project and thanks for any help!

In a word, no. You will need a battery. What I have noticed is that the alternator becomes magnetized by the battery when the ignition is turned on. You can, however, get away with something quite small.

This past season I ran a 4 lb scooter battery from wal-mart without issue. If you wanted to spend more than $30 I am sure you could find something that weighs less than a pound.

I use a 2.1amp alarm battery and so far its been great, even with the projector lamps on (only 35watts and led rear lamp)

Keep meaning to post some photos but after the resent update on my phone it wont connect to the computer any more! Gotta love modern tech. So far ive cut off the rear of the frame where the rear blinkers were up to where the rear rubber mounts from teh stock seat rest on the frame.Looks pretty cool if i do say so myself.Seem to have lost the kickstand spring while i was removing and cleaning parts up any body know if one off an xs 650 would fit.Found some on mikes xs and wondered if they would work.
