Leaving the engine apart too long?

My XS400 recently stopped running. So we decided to take the engine apart down to the pistons and examine the engine. We decided to do a full engine rebuild. I ordered new gaskets, and am preparing to re hone the cylinders.

The problem is that the bike has been covered, but sitting torn apart for about 3 weeks now. I wanted to see if anyone had any advice about anything that might be an issue, now that the bike has been apart this long. Whats the longest any of you have left your bike torn down?

the biggest issues are losing parts, breaking them by tripping over them and rust.

I have rebuilt an engine and used assembly oil which is very sticky and coats all engine components for protection. the problem with the engine in bits and being oiled is that it will attrct dirt and insects.

I'd stick them in a sealed plastic box and spray over marine oil to preserve. when you are ready to rebuild, get it all in a parts washer and clean the hell out of them before assembly
