Well guys I got the bike running and most all of the mechanical and electrical problems worked out. Now it's time to start cleaning the bike up and getting it looking good. What would be the best way to lift the decals off the tank and the tail section without scraping them?

if they are laid ontop of the clear/paint then you need a hairdryer of if you have no hair, a heat gun.
Gently heat it and lift with your finger!

If its laquered, then sandpaper and re laquer if your good

Thanks drewpy. I was gonna do it that way but I wasn't sure if there was a better way since those decals have been on there for 30 plus years.

Either way the paint underneath will be a different color. Red is the worst for fading so you're probably looking at a tank and side-cover repaint [so they match].
Maybe you didn't want to take off those stripes after all?
Or maybe after thirty years it could use a shiney new paint job?
