lowering the front forks

so i have decided to lower the front forks on my 82 xs 400 . I wanna go about 2 to 3 inches on the drop , but i have also read about using a pvc spacer at the bottom of the tub.. if i cut 2 or 3 inches off the spring how long or short should my spacer be ???

to give the bike a lower profile also because im a little vertically challenged..

I think you can just lower the tubes in the triple tree.

I've never heard of anyone cutting the fork springs; there has to be a reason why.
