My vin# is 3F8-024365 manufactured 11/79

I know it's a 1980, but what model letter is it?

XS400H
Or is it something else?
XS400?

Thanks to who ever knows the model letter after the 400.

According to Skillzman1's post earlier my bike is either a XS400SG or a XS400H.

My Vin# on the frame and engine is: 3F8-024365
The label on the frame shows 11/79 as the manufacturers date.

According to the chart I have mixed information of what model my bike is. 3F8 was made in 12/79, mine shows 11/79. 3F9 was made in 11/79, mine shows 3F8.

If any one can clear this up that would be greatly appreciated.

Copied from Skillzman1's post:

"special 2 3F8 12/79 1980
XS400SG
special 3F9 11/79 1980
XS400H"

I'm reading Skillzman1's post differently. The way I read it, the XS400G special 2 is the only model that has a VIN# starting with "3F8".
I assumed the "12/79" in his post refers to the month the month the 1980 model was introduced, not necessarily the month when a specific unit was manufactured.
But I could be wrong - assumptions can be useful deductive tools but are not definitive.

Thanks! That's helpful. I will go with the 3F8 12/79 info.

Trying to make sense of a XS400 I just bought. The Frame number isJYA4R5005xxxxx, the engine number starts 3F8 and the bike is registered as an 1981 XS400H..Is this correct or has there been an engine swap?...Thanks, Spad

This is what I started to think after reading this site...Bike supposedly has 5,600 miles on it. It was listed as a 1980, but registerd as an 81. It runs...Gonna make a café bike out of it. Spad

With these old bikes it's not uncommon to find bikes with donor engines in them.

Just looked at your pics and the engine is off an 82 sohc xs400. As for the rest of the bike the wheels I don't know. The frame is not stock also.

Hi guys, I've got a Japan made XS400 80 model, but I can't figure which exact XS400 it may be. Can alone help me? On the engine it has a imprint of 5E8-000115
