New '80 XS400 SII, trouble with electrical

Hey all,

Just picked up my first bike, a 1980 XS400 SII. We got it running immediately and had very few issues. Eventually had to replace the battery, now having trouble getting it to start. Replaced the starter and now have figured out that the alternator isn't doing it's job.

Does anyone know where I can get a new one entirely, or should I just be looking for the coil?

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but just look at the first few pages of newest threads and start reading. This issue comes up 4 or 5 times a day, along with carb issues. Read, then read some more. The answers are there!

He's right. Also, the manuals are downloadable on this sight. They have all the tests required to figure out where your problems are. Chances are, it's not the stator or field coil but the wiring and/or voltage regulator. Grab yourself a multimeter and a beer (or 6, it could take a while) and have at it.
