Hello

Ive just joined the forum as Ive picked up my 1980 XS 400. I presume these questions have already been asked but please help.

I need a new rear chrome mudguard. There are ones on ebay for the RD 400 upto 1979. Are they the same or can anyone tell me where to find one.

Also who are the best for mail order parts in the UK apart from Yamaha themselves.

Thanks

Sean

PS please tell me how original it looks. I want to get it mechanically right and commute this summer before a full resto next winter.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Your bike looks nice but your 1980 does not look like my 1980 XS400! Any chance it is a year older? Ours here in the U.S. changed the look with '80 models.

I would say its a 79er or earlier, i drive the same model with rear disc-brake and square-tank. Beside that, she looks pretty and quite original, i only don´t recognize the double-stripes on the side-covers, but she looks standard. There are lots of shops in Europe for parts, only a few parts are hard to find. Once you ask specifically, you will allways get right answers. Wellcome and greets form Munich Hannes

welcome to the forum.

you'll never get a rear guard for the bike, its gonna have to be restored by a specialist.

Not sure where your from as you hav'nt completed your details!

Thanks for your replies. Just been out and checked the frame/engine number against the data on here and it is a 2A2 model which relates to a USA model XS400D built 1977.

I am now scratching my head and can only think it was for some reason imported to UK in 1980 and re registered here. Im pleased it is the older original model.

Will an Rd 400 rear mudguard fit in that case.

Thanks again.

Sean

Drewpy I will fill the form out. Im in Nottingham. The old one is rusted through on both sides. It looks Ok but is paper thin.

What modfications need to be made - is it down to the shape or the fixing ponts?

Sean

Hi Sean,
I've never bought one so don't know.

why not buy/borrow a shitty one off someone and see what it looks like.

I got mine from Canada, but was a custom guard, had to blank off the rear lamp mounts and re drill, scary moment

still had to get it rechromed.

NOS one here if your serious only $200 plus shipping

Let me think about it !

I will find an old Rd one and have a look and post the results. Thanks for all your help. I will no doubt be using this forum a lot.

I know its not an XS but heres a pic of my Yz 360 Ohlins/Noleen race bike that I ve just finished. I might do the same colour schemes for my XS !

its really solid. just some heavy surface rust on the chrome. nothing that a wire wheel or scotch-brite pad on the out side wouldnt fix. sandblast the inside. its still really thick. a also have the inner one. mine is a 79, but i think its the same except for the tanks and seat. could be wrong. just tryin to help

Sean, I've got a 2A2 that was exactly the same as yours, so I must have the rear mudguard somewhere in my flat. I will have a look tomorrow to see if a can find it, as I will not be using it myself.

Thanks for all the replys. I had a feeling you lot would be spot on having read some of the threads.

Did the round trip of 40 miles today to and from work and never missed a beat. There is some oil from between the head and barrel which needs sorting. I smiled all the way inside my helmet and got some very odd looks from some motorists and a few thumbs up. Its been 35 years since Ive ridden an un faired bike and Jeez its cold but she will be back out tomorrow.

Cheers.

just recommisioning mine for the season today!

new semi synth oil and filter, re-oiled me cables and cleaned out the oil strainer under the engine.

Started after I primed the oil pressure!

Welcome Sean!
Nice YZ 360! how does it handle on the track?
I love 2-stroke machines, grew up with motocross. :)

And having a street bike with the same colors would look cool in the garage. :)

The 1989 Yz 250 was a great bike but with a 360 motor it pulls really well. It has the torque of a 500 without the weight and still revs like a 250. Happy days.

I am speaking with a chap to make fiberglass front and rear mudguards in white gel coat so that I can paint the tank etc white and fit the speed block design. I dont know how it will look on the Xs but having seen it on an RD Im going to try it.
Just bought a NOS barrel off ebay as they dont come around often and need to find some std pistons and rings.

This is what Im thinking
