Rubber discs

It sounds tedious but if you take them out, put them back in the same spot.
Numbering them might be a good idea, or sticking them to a piece of tape.

I did not. I guess through time and heat they compressed to fit the slight variations in spacing between fins.
Took some trial and error to get them to fit again.
 
They are not for protecting the fins but to cushion the vibes in the top end of the motor. I took them out on my 79 when I got it back in 99 and the motor made a LOT more racket. I put them back and never did it again. I see no real benefit to remove them other than to clean the fins easier. I do it all the time. Just put them back where they came from.
 
Same here, I took mine out on the last rebuild, now occasionally there is a Humming noise from the Fins. Apparently when Yamaha made the engine, it was (and is) the fins are at an angle to the forward direction of the bike. making the noise more prevalent. With that said, Are you really going to worry about that little noise when your at WOT, I don't think so. (I have yet to start working on my bike since the latest break down)
