Hi to all, I'm usually on the XS650 forum, but I joined here to learn a little about the 400's as well. My friend owns one. What is the smallest rear sprocket you can put on the XS400? He is wanting to get a little less rpm on the highway. Lots of that around here.

It will depend on what year because they come with different front sprockets. I have a 16 front and switched from a 39 rear to a 37. Works fine.

My '80 has a 16 on the engine and with the 16" rear tire, a 37 tooth sprocket. The 18" rear tire from a '79 has a 39 tooth sprocket to compensate for the diameter difference. As said above, depends on the year and tire size already installed.

Good point about the wheel size- mine's 18" with the 16/37.

all the sohc are 16 front, its the rear that changes (even 250/360's)
