Start with kick starter, but not by starter

1977 xs400e starter turns over nicely, even starts it every now and then. But kick starter always starts. Compression 115 lbs dry. Spark is not that strong, but when running no issues; spark visible but not what I'm used to seeing. Carbs clean. Needs 2.75 turns on the pilot screws. Stock air cleaner and exhaust.

Any body have any ideas.

Where to start???

Starter:
Service the battery.
Clean the battery connections and where they go to.
Clean the connections from the starter solenoid to the starter.

Weak spark:
Check the resistance of the spark plug boots.
Check the wires.
Points and condensers?
Clean all wiring connections from ignition switch through to the coils.

Those are the ideas that come to mind immediately. Oh, and read the service manual.
