Valves adjusted. Still making noise

I adjusted the valves on my 82 xs400. The tapping noise was quiet at first then got louder and louder the more it ran. I think the damage is done. Time to pull the valve cover off and see what's going on. I may be looking for a cyl head in the near future. Any tip or tricks would be appreciated. Thanks!

You'll probably have to pull the head to get down to the real gnitty gritty.

I pulled the valve cover off (after drilling out the stupid brass plug in the ignition cover) so I got it pulled and I literally found nothing visually wrong. My only finding is when adjusting the valves the right side exhaust adjuster was very hard to turn. I think I'm going too look for a Rodger arm with the adjuster included and see if that helps any. Has anyone had this problem?
