What's this cork doing in my engine?

Yes. That's right. There is a cork in my engine.

It's the beige/brown looking thing stuck in the front of the engine, it seems to be doing a job there as it is in a hole. It's the thing in the middle between my exhaust outlets and then a little higher, straight below the right indicator in this pic. What is it doing there? I didn't put it in there, one of the previous owners must have put it there? Is it there for a reason?

I'm kinda goin for the ratbike look so I think I'll just leave it there, unless it's somehow harming my bike.

Any thoughts?
 
As I suggested to Squirrely, go to your local auto parts store and get one of these in the correct size. I'd imagine it would be a more secure alternative.

Ah right that makes sense, my dials have been replaced and I have no tachometer now.

I'ts pretty tight in there, I would have to actually use a corkscrew to get it out so I think I'll just leave it as is. But perhaps I'll buy one of those things just so I have it lying around
