does anyone know if a cafe seat made for an xs650 fit my 79 xs400?

Perhaps with some major modifications, but definitely not a direct bolt-on. To be honest, it would be much easier (and most cost effective) to build your own. Lots of good advice on here on how to do it.

I think it depends on what you are doing. I don't thing the seat pans are a direct cross over, (I may be wrong but i think the hinges bolt on the other side) but if you were buying a seat pad that you were going to mount to the XS400 pan i think it would be pretty do-able.
there are many threads like this. but no. it will not.

I Bought a really nice fibreglass cafe seat from www.kickstarter.de in Germany for my original cafe build.It was about £60 GBP,which i thought was cheap,shipped fast to UK,and almost fitted perfectly....just had to "nip" it in a bit at the front and reinforce with some new fibreglass...can't find the photo's of that as i'm building a hardtail chop now and must've deleted the pics from my library
