XS400 is difficult to start and backfires

That is my biggest reason that I don't use ethanol fuel. There is a chance that there is nothing wrong with it, if you can get it running, run it empty (nearly) then put in fuel marked Gas only, 100% gas. Gas for old vehicles and old off road vehicles. If I use ethanol fuel, in about 3 days of no touch, it will do like you said, doesn't want to start, then it be pita. BBS360 is right, if you clean the carbs, that will get you running. then never use that ethanol fuel again. (unless your driving it daily)

Ethanol will gum up the openings. which is why I like to call it corn syrup. Hope that is all thats wrong with it. One time when it was running poorly it backed fire once, as I was getting onto the interstate, and then it started running right. I chaulk that up to the Itailian tune up technique.
