I have an 82 Maxim 400 DOHC and it has a hole in the bottom case, right under the oil pump. The piece is rattling around in the bottom case.

So I'm going to remove the bottom case to repair it, but I don't want to disturb the whole top end if possible. The service manual and the teardown thread on this forum both show a top-down disassembly, usually to replace worn parts throughout the engine. In this case I have a clean low mile engine and just need the bottom case removed.

Has anyone done this? Remove the bottom case only?

The bottom case should come right off, as it does with the SOHC version. Beware of some hidden bolts on the top half that may need to be removed.

Cases are a matched set and cannot be interchanged.

Id say that internal damage of some sort is likely. Check everything.
