I have a 78 and a 79 (with an 80 motor) put pods on both factory exhaust on the 80 and straight pipe with baffles on the 78 and did not need to change anything? plugs are a nice tan brown right now? We are at about 4000-6000 ft...
so you may not have to do anything to it?
i have 2 bikes a 78 and a 79.. we ended up putting on Pod airfilters on both. the 79 has stock exhaust and the 78 has shorty chrome straight pipes with baffles (it sounds great to be honest) Although I have adjusted the carbs and idle screws I have not changed jets on either. Now I have no...
Sorry man forgot about the year.. 1977-1981 XS400 had 33mm tubes 82 (maxim) had 35mm so you will need the 33 mm ones 77-81..
here is a link to a page that has all of the sizes for bearings and forks for all Jap bikes...
I cut my own engine gaskets from gasket paper.. it was $9.00 for a roll and I have made quite a few gaskets for my bike so far.. a little time with a sharp knife and they fit pretty decent. So far so goo.
exhaust well if you need them its pretty tough to cut those ones.. :-)
does it turn over if you kick start it? if it will only click it could be your electrical connections at the fuse box.. very common on these bikes.
If it will turn over check your fuse box.. if you have good power to everything short your solinoid to see if it turns over..
I am assuming you...
yes you are going to have to take off the left side (stator) cover off.. looks like you are missing the gear? there is also a plastic tension guide in there?
When inside check all of your bolts that hold the alternator inside the cover itself. I have seen 2 loose ones now. If a bolt comes...
as i have found over and over.. take off your carbs and clean them.. especially the right side.. there is something in there somewhere.. take out all of your jets inspect them.. blow air through every hole..
read and watch this...
well cleaned the carbs again last night.. and this morning at 5 degrees Celsius. It fired up on both Cylinders.. would have never thought it was a carb issue...
thanks Eric.. now will do a sync and see if that helps with any fine tuning. Thanks guys.

ya I know the feeling .. I started with 2 for my son and I (spring project) somehow a 3rd ended up in my garage.. pretty good shape other than needing valve seals.. we will see how these two come out first before deciding what to do with the 3rd.. (girlfriend bike?) or selling one of the 3...
Hi guys my son's bike, 79 xs400, Seems to start OK our temperatures have been close to freezing still most days here.. but left side runs right side is on and off unless you get the rpm's up to about 2500 then right side is fine.. once the bike has been warmed up a little right side works fine...
hey Fubar did you notice the guy on Edmonton Kijiji that had a 650 parts bike and a 79 xs1100 for sale for $600 for the pair.. my first is not even done and I already wish i had the 1100 just from a power perspective.. we will see.. the 400 has a little snap and is so light.. I am not sure how...
I ordered mine from http://www.xs650direct.com/... same as MikesXS for us Canadians..
it was only $48 for the AGM.. not sure of the quality as I just got it.. but it fits and runs my bike fine. My order was over $150 (i needed lots of stuff.. LOL) so shipping was free.. it was about $100 less...
DO NOT USE A 3 ARM PULLER...
The bolt you are talking about is actually called a Flywheel puller.. it is simply a bolt you screw into the crank shaft.. once finger tight or snug with a wrench (not impact or something stupid tight) hit it with a hammer.. tighten a little more and hit it again...
