Thank you so much for this, I was having a really hard time with the manual. I know I didn't touch the cam gear bolts among other things I probably didn't pay attention to.

I'll double check this, but the main issue I've been having is the fact that the manual only ever refers to the intake cam, and never once refers to the exhaust cam when describing timing. It says to align the L mark with the line, and then to set "the" cam to have the dot align with the arrow...

I'm pretty sure the maxim, seca, and special all share the same DOHC 400, but there could be differences in tuning. The numbers read low to me, too, but at this point I'd be happy if the bike just ran and idled properly, which it (sort of) did before. So something I've done has messed that up...

hi, many thanks for replying - yea, I don't think the compression would be an issue to at least START it. This bike has electronic ignition timing, so is it still settable? My understanding was that it was automatic. My cam timing looks good to you? I was having trouble deciphering the book.

It's me again - the bike won't start. Here's a brief summary of everything I've done. 1982 xs400j Maxim (dohc), bought with carberator issues and revhang, wouldn't rev above 4500 rpm. Cleaned carbs, retested, no change. Rebuilt carbs with original carb parts, some change - no longer running...

Thanks for the advice - I've been trying to avoid this situation by only touching one thing at a time, but things kept not improving. I don't own a strobe, but I do have a simple timing probe. This is my first real project, so I'm learning as I go. I'll give this a shot and see what I find !

Gotcha, how do I know which shims are right? I've measured my shims, and know that I need 3 that are 2.65-2.7 and one that is around 2.75 mm thick, but how do I know which ones to order? Are they specific to the xs400 or are there general bike shims? Sorry, this particular thing is insanely...
