1982 Maxim xs400j, I can drive this forever but in the manuel it says it should have 6 gears, but mine only has got 5 gears.

Is this right or is there something wrong.
But I wish it had a sixth.

It should have 5. The manual you are reading is probably for the SECA. Which has the same frame, suspension, engine, but different transmission and some body parts.

Get a 16t up front. It helps a lot.

If you are bored, got money, and want 6 speeds you can swap in the seca transmission internals(for 6 speeds)

That is correct.

The 82xs400j is the Maxim and it has 5 gears
The 82xs400rj is the Seca and it has 6 gears

I have a manual and the back pages have side by side spec charts...
some are the same some vary slightly.

I bought an '83 this April and I felt the same way - glad I had the Maxim since it's prettier than the SECA, but wishing I could cut the revs on the highway. The rear sprocket is already as small as they seem to go (35T) so the only alternative (short of swapping transmissions - don't laugh, at least one guy on here did it) is to install a bigger front sprocket. I put a 17T on and am very pleased with the result. It took half an hour to do the swap and the part cost $23.
