Clutch issue

I am attempting to adjust the clutch. I followed the instructions in the service manual. I can switch gears just fine it even seems easy... While in gear the back wheel spins with the clutch lever pulled. Sometimes the wheel spins in neutral sometimes it doesn't. If the bike is in first gear I can release the clutch lever but the bike doesn't die. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you're actually in neutral/first. I get false neutrals that will turn on the neutral light on occasion.

If the clutch is adjusted correctly there should be a few mm of free play at the hand lever before it starts to put any tension on the cable.

Make sure you're using the correct oil.
