i'm planning on cutting the stock springs in the rear and i've done a custom rear tail light that sits right on top of the rear tire. i weigh 150-160 pounds and i'd like to know approximately how much clearance i need because i'd like it as low as possible. i see people running fenders pretty close to the tire but if it rubs the fender NBD. if it cracks my tail light i won't be so happy.

thanks!

150-160 pounds...do the springs even move when you ride on them, also if yours are the adjustable ones, you can tighten them all the way up to get less travel, as for how much travel is needed im not really sure, my ratty 400 doesnt have a fender on it...

Make a bumpstop. That will limit your maximum stroke of the suspension.
