I've got a 1978 xs 400 with a broken shift lever, looking to buy a replacement. Anybody know where I can get a reasonably priced replacement?

That's part # 2L1-18111-00-00, the same lever from 1976-1982

The shift shaft is standard Yamaha 11.35mm, 30 tooth spline. I might have a similar stock shifter left over from something I installed rear sets or forward controls on. I will dig through the bins tomorrow for you. It just depends on the length and bend to clear the case covers etc.

The closest thing I have is this cast unit that has quite a clearance bend for a much wider case cover :

Looks like that Mikes lever might be the way to go if you can not locate an original for a decent price.

Have you tried cleaning both surfaces and then soldering it in position?
Even if the solder doesn't bond enough to seal it like you'd need for a plumbing joint, if it hardened up fully in the grooves, it would likely tighten it up enough to use indefinitely. Might make it harder to adjust later though ...

I am forever destine to open that cover up. (apparently) I tried to use a plastic tie, and it didn't do any good, it slipped two splines for sure, maybe more.

I think this is the one to go with. I did see one made of steel, probably off MikesXS site. but I didn't get any warm fuzzies for compatible with the XS400 (XS650) Well come to think of it, I found it from our site, so its probably fine. http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?p=147720

On mine, the spline was OK, but the lever was broken again after a previous weld. I went with the part # Dean provided, 2L1-18111-00-00 and looked online. Found one that was a 30 some dollars and free shipping. Can't remember the suppliers name but I think I got the last one in stock anyway.
