I Hey, just got this old barn find home and got the engine idling last week so I'm going to go ahead and try a rebuild. The bike has no rear wheel, chain or brake tho.
I need to figure out what kind of brake it is set up for disc or drum.
The front has a disc on it so can I assume the rear was a disc also? Reason I ask is because it looks like it has a support arm for a drum.
If anyone could have a look and throw some ideas at me that'd be awesome.
Also can aftermarket full brake assemblies be purchased for these bikes?
Thanks!

my advice is to get another parts bike, if you're buying parts separately you will spend all your cash and it's never going to be worth it..

rear brake is a drum on almost all the xs400 models, only a few seca's (dohc bike, you have a sohc) were fitted with a disc at the rear. Not to worry though, the drum brake is perfectly adequate for these bikes.

Thanks!
I hit the classifieds up today looking for a parts bike. I found a decent looking Maxim 400 that isn't running. Would you say that enough parts would be interchangeable between the models to be worth the purchase?

It is a different bike and most parts will not work. You need to find a sohc model.
