motor running rich

Greeting to all and ty for all your info your posted so far, has got my 400 running! I have an issue with it running rich, both sides equal (1978 xs400 2E). Have been thru the carbs and seems clean, new floats, needles & seats. Set at 26 and screws out 3 turns, needle clip 3 from top. Despite any adjustments (floats... tried from 22-32 no difference, idle screws 1.25 to 3) seems to soot up the plugs with carbon in about 5m on idle then begins running rough and dies. Mid and full throttle all seems fine, what am i missing all jets match oem specs. Any help would be great!! thx all

Was it running OK before? Any recent changes? What do your air filters look like? Is it burning oil?

new project, was not running when i got it. All is stock, air filters in good shape. Dosent burn oil, no smoke.

What have you done ignition wise? Timing, wires and caps, what spark plugs, tested coils?

have not checked any ignition items, starts on first or second kick even with fouled plugs. plugs are ngk bp7es. I had thought possibly had weak ignition system but runs great in higher rpms.

Thx drewpy!! It's confirmed, worn needle jet orfices. Both shaped like an egg! Will be getting some new ones and get it out on the road. Ty all for your replys
