Brand spa kin new to the forum and to the vintage cafe world.
Picked me up a 78 XS400 a few weeks back for $850 RUNNING. New coils, wires and spark plugs(<ill get to that in a second) other then that stock.
Got her home and ran it around the apartment complex for about an hour.
Definitely needed a good tune up but ran great! Rode it for about 4 days after until well...
The motor blew.
The right piston is no more. Buddies at the shop said what look like happened was the previous owner put a helicoil in the right spark plug(<told you). But from the looks of it never took the top end off so none of the metal shavings from boring out the threads would fall into the cylinder.
So the piston gets stuck, the piston rod goes through the piston and, Voilà! I have a beautiful rolling chassis.
Ive come to the fact that my very limited knowledge for engines in general is left me with the choice to either sell the chassis and call it quits. Or, find a engine from a parts bike/salvage yard and hope like hell the same thing does happen again.
Ive decided to keep it and find me an engine!
I know now from snooping around this forum what to look for and found the right people to point me in the right direction!
Heres some before and after pictures!
Enjoy and look forward to sharing this dream with all of yall!
