At the beginning of the season I replaced my front tire with a bias ply tire from the dealer and a new inner tube, I now badly need a rear one, the guy at the dealer seems very knowledgeable and he said my wheels wher not designed to run modern tires, and to stick with bias ones, does that sound accurate? Isn't bias tires substandard to modern ones? I have spoked wheels if that matters.

http://www.michelinag.com/Innovating/Radial-vs.-Bias-technology I don't think the xs400 came with bias tires in 82. For the best handling and tire life go with radials front and rear. From what I have read never mix the two. I have run bias in the front and radials in the back with no issues but when I got my 79 15 years ago it have a bias in the back and it handled terrible.
