Set Valve Clearance without Engine Oil?

This may be a very stupid question, but is it possible to set the valve clearances without having oil in the engine?

My engine is currently on my workbench after getting my cylinders honed and I wanted to check my valves in a comfortable setting before putting the engine back in the frame. Since I have to have my oil filter off to put the engine back I don't want to waste a bunch of oil filling it on my bench, setting the valves, then taking the filter off, putting the engine back in my frame, putting the filter back on, and filling it again...

Yes its no probs at all thats what I did too (You wont damage anything when you turn the crank for the different positions)
