Speed ranges for each Gear

Hey guys. I'm a new owner of a 1980 xs400. This is also my first motorcycle.

I'm trying to get an idea of what the speed range for each gear is. Like whats the fastest I should be going in 1st before I should switch to second, third, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a tachometer on your bike? It will indicate safe operating engine speed in each gear before you kill your engine. After riding a bit you will gain sense insight into how your bike works best (listening, feeling, seeing -hopefully not smelling or tasting)

I usually shift at around 5k rpm's per gear.

Yeah it's got a tac. I'm slowly getting te feel for it. Thanks for the advice
