I was pretty close to giving up after having to buy a TCI & pickup coil & ignition coils..but now, well now Im throwing a fit like a 2 year old.

Finally got my bike firing on both cylinders & after jetting and pods it will bearly idle then die with any touch of throttle.

Heres what Ive tried:
Clean carbs
Clean carbs
Clean carbs
adjust mixture screws
2 washers on needles between orange bumper & clip
tried all diff size 135 140 145 150 155 main jets
adjust floats
Clean carbs
hooked up petcock vacuum
tightened all boot clamps

Any help Im grateful for, Im hating the bike at this point..
I know there are issues when jetting these but holy crap
Also are there supposed to be clips attaching the float needles to the tang?
Thinking PO might have screwed me yet again, I definitely do not see any.

Thanks,
TJ

But the million dollar question is, did you clean the carbs?

There should be a little clip on each float, yes. However, making them out of a tiny piece of steel wool should solve your problem. It's entirely possible that your floats are your problem if you are missing that little clip.

What year is your bike?

My '78 does NOT have clips on the float needles.

What is your float height set to?

What pilot jet are you using?

Which pod filters are you using?

LOL yes they are spic & span!
I wouldnt mind making some clips but can swear there were none there & they seal good without any.
I was hoping you would reply bcware, its an 82 seca running emgo pods, stock pilots & I couldnt tell you the float height, I had a guy known to be a wiz with carbs adjust them & hes also stumped. Kit was from 6sigma & only contains main jet. I also was confused by the instructions on what position they say to drill out the tiny hole, so I decided not to.Im gonna go back to all stock tomorrow & see how/if she runs.

on the seca, you need to set float height 2mm from top of float bowl. I did my carbs off the bike set on a vice. That way you can pull the bowls off easier.

I have 50 pilots 142.5 mains on the dohc carbs with free flow exhaust on

TY drewpy, Ill give it a go!
Ill pulled them about 12 times in the last 2 days so thats no biggie, correct height might be the key for me.

when cleaning the carbs..did you push the brass guide out that the main jet screws into?...from the bottom of the carb with the jet and washer out...you push the whole brass piece out into the intake track...mine was full of crud and all the little air holes were blocked.

Thanks skillzman, tried that to no avail not sure wth is going on here.
Even went back to all stock specs on the carbs & no dice.
Gonna post a video tomorrow maybe someone can relate..read about 30 threads on this topic & everyone has a different solution.
I know the spark plugs are definitely trash now after trying to run it like this.
One backfire blew my fuse & then she went back to firing on one side.
Hate to do it but might have to just save up to take it to a shop.

Well, I for one am just glad you didn't set fire to her (yet).

:twocents:By process of elimination, if
  1. the carbs are clean, and the boots have no leaks,
  2. none of the jets have any nicks or missing washers, springs or other bits,
  3. the compression is ok in each cyl,
  4. the valve clearances are ok and the timing is set right,
  5. the battery is okay and the wires go to the right plugs,
  6. the exhausts each have the same and enough back pressure, and
  7. the charging thingy charges ....
then doesn't it HAVE to be something intermittent in the electrical?

I second the electrical gremlin idea!
check coils for proper continuity...750 ohms +/- 150 IIRC
Check the cdi box is good..clean the connections with electrical cleaner,etc,..
check how many volts at battery and at coil...see if theres a large drop in voltage from a bad connection in between
check/clean grounds.
