Hey all,
Been lurking for a while and using a lot of the info on here with good success. thanks for all the helpful posts.

Ive been working on my 1981 XS400 Special II and decided to put pod filters and shorty "silencers" on.
Understanding that i needed to re-jet after opening up the airways, I purchased this jet kit. https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-dyno-tune-needle-jet-kit-for-bs-34.html.
This bumped my main jet to 145 and pilot jets to 45. The jet needles seemed to be longer than that stock needles. The stock needles didn't have any notches to make adjustments with the clip. I installed the kit as the instructions on mikesxs site showed. mounted carbs and tried to start, not working... I'm ASSuming its the jet needles and needle jets? Where's the best place to get the correct needles if thats what it is?

So, i missed a small but important step. Turn the petcock to PRI and let sit for a while.... Came back after an hour and bumped the start button and it fired right up. Seems to idle great. Will ride to work in the morning (5 miles) and see how it does.

Update: ended up ditching the jet needle i got with the kit and going to the local hardware store for some tiny washers to shim my old needle. 2 washers up and its idling great. A little popping at times though. Maybe need to adjust air/fuel mixture?

Those air filters and them mufflers are the worst setup for these bikes. You should have left it the way it was to begin with. But it's your bike, do what you want.

I purchased it with full intentions of going either brat/cafe or tracker with it. I'm going to do a battery delete so needed to eliminate the stock air box setup. I'm open to suggestions on quality aftermarket filter and exhaust options. Experimenting with a couple different looks until I settle on what I'll end up with and along the way show my boys how to take things apart and put back together.

I have some unis and using the stock H pipe on mine. Have not got it going yet but from everything I have read everyone says use the factory pipe or make one.

I like the looks so far!

Thanks, Spectra. Once the battery delete is done and the electronics are cleaned up under the seat, I will add the H-pipe back on. This really rips for a 400! Quite a difference than when I rode it home in stock status. Trying to keep it a daily driver as much as possible so tackling projects that I can get done in a night or on a Saturday.

Understand that one.............a night :laugh2: hell I was working on mine all last night.....................came inside at 4 am ;) been hot here lately and garage time is few and far so...................

So your going to put a PMA charging system in the bike? If not you will still need a battery of some sort to run the bike.

I have a lithium ion battery that just arrived to try. Otherwise was going to install the PMA. Stripped the brake, clutch and throttle cables off tonight after the ride home. Each need to be shortened by about 9". Luckily there is a cycle salvage next door to where I work and they have a full wall of cables. They said to bring them in and match the ends up and pick what length I need.

Make sure it can handle a charge rate of at least 14.5-7 volts. That's what these bikes put out.

Got a few more things switched. LED headlight and signals. Plasti dipped the tank and covers. Found a tach cable at the cycle salvage and ordered a 2.5" mini tach from DCC. Tried to find shorter throttle, clutch and brake cables with no luck. I'll leave them as is for now and maybe work on them over the winter. I think next might be knee denting the tank...
