Anyone in Southern California want XS400 parts? I have almost 2 complete engines, a set of carbs, a wiring harness and bunch of other random stuff. Need it out of the garage. Come and get it.

Hi MetalHead, I also have a set of carbs, but they need to be cleaned/rebuilt. Also Lewkmiller, I have another set of carbs that are disassembled I should have the springs you need. I can check them when I am home and send you a picture.

I do have a rear master cylinder. I will pull it out of the parts bin and see what shape it's in. It may need a rebuild, but maybe not. I will send you a PM later this evening. Thanks

Well, I was able to drill out the plug and and get the cover off. Just ast you said, it looks like everything will fit just fine. That's the good news, the bad news is that I started to look over the rest of the motor I bought and found that the housing for the kickstarter is cracked... badly...

That's what I was thinking originally, but then I saw the brass plug in the right screw hole. Should I just drill that out? Also is the end of the cam shaft the same length?

A couple weeks ago I posted a video of an engine knock I had in a newly rebuilt motor in my 1977 XS400. It was determined that there was end play in the crank that was causing the knock. At some point I may rebuild this motor with new bearings, but for now I just want to ride the bike...

The motor was seized when I got it. Never heard it run.

The bottom end is from a different motor. Not idea what the miles are. The bottom case, crank, gears and pistons are from that different motor, everything else is from the original motor which has 5500 miles on it. The original motor was sitting for 30 years so all the oil turned to a soild...

So after further investigation, the noise seemed to be coming from under the side cover on the left side (where the starter is) I took the cover off and have found the source of the noise. The crank seems to have a little play. If I push and pull on the crank it moves slightly. It does not...

The noise to me seems to be coming from the cam cover on the right side, but I know noise can travel, so who knows. Also, when the noise went away under braking, it was in gear without the clutch engaged. If I engaged the clutch while braking, I would still hear the noise. So I do not think...

I did not get new pistons and rings. I am sure that it is possible that the engine is sloppy. I guess that I will have the mechanic look at it and if it ends up needing the engine rebuilt again, well....... we shall see. :( I'm not sure if I want to dive into that again. I am hoping that...

Thanks for the input. I have not synced the carbs. I think I am going to take it to a guy who specializes in vintage bikes to check them out. Fine tuning carbs is an art that I have not mastered yet! I thought it could be an oil issue, but I rode it around last night and if I applied...
