What did you do with your XS today?

Also, LED turn signals have been installed with an EP-34 relay ... for those of you who intend to use this ... pay attention to both the orientation of the relay plugs from the relay's packaging as well as the wiring to the plug in your harness ... there's an instructional thread on installing an EP-34 for LEDs which indicated that you can just plug and play and only have to mess with a ground wire to give a better grounding ... well ... I used a different brand relay than that poster did as my local Advance Auto didn't carry the brand he used ... as such ... much aggravation ensued until I figured it out ... one of those deals where you're supposed to take 15min to do a project and it takes 90min :banghead:

Would like to hear more about your findings, going through the same conundrum on my end. Would you be able to post a bit about it on the flasher relay topic sometime?

I'd be happy to but probably not until tomorrow or Thursday. Currently, my turn signals have been intermittent, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, I'm not currently sure if it's the switch going bad or a crappy relay (of course, I may have damaged it somewhat when trying to hook it up wrong) - that would be the easiest fix. Sunday night it worked flawlessly but last night I noticed issues so I'll have to figure this out - MAN I HATE ELECTRICAL ISSUES!!!!!! :wtf: I'm headed to Montana and Wyoming on vacation for 2 weeks leaving Saturday so I won't be able to give any correspondence during that time.

Cheers!

Finally making some progress on my 79. Picked it up pretty much stock about 4 years for 600 bucks with 8000 miles on it. By stock, I mean everythinnnnng. I put a few hundred bucks into it by putting new handlebars, mirrors, 50/50 treads, shorty blinkers, and a new headlight bucket on the bike. With the shorty blinkers, the lights started acting up, only working past 3000k rpm. Switched out the relay for a generic relay from the autoparts store and now they work perfectly, even without the bike running.

At the end of the season last year, the 37 year old chain decided to break on me while going down the highway. Luckily, nothing bad happened. I had adjusted the chain about 2 weeks earlier to spec but it seemed to be getting loose again at the time of the break.

Fast forward to this spring.

I decided to order new carb holders, stainless steel engine hardware (PO had replaced sprocket cover bolts with hex heads), new air filters, new oil filter and oil filter washer plate (who knows what happened to the old one), new front and rear sprockets and chain, a new shift lever (broke the old one taking sprocket cover off), new fuel line, and new rear shocks/springs.

gotta pick up a new inline fuel filter.

While tearing the bike down, I broke the two hinge bolts on the front hinge in the seat pan. These are going to be fun getting out. any suggestions?

The frame has quite a few rusty spots around the welds...a complete tear down and repaint will be in order quite soon.

I cleaned 37 years or dirt and oil/grease from the frame today the best I could without totally dismantling her.

I also replaced the old cracked carb holders. The old ones were in terrible shape, but none of the cracks were all the way through once I pulled them off and inspected them.

I cleaned the H-pipe and air boxes which also had years of grime built up. I checked the air filters last year and they were fine but when I pulled them apart a few hours ago...........:yikes::yikes::yikes:

I cleaned the carbs the best I could without taking them apart, but a refresh will also be in order soon.

I replaced the bolts on the crankcase cover, starter cover, and points cover with the stainless hardware.

The inside of the sprocket cover was a mess. What is the best way to clean this area while protecting the wiring?

To do in the next few days....replace sprockets and chain, replace rear shocks, change oil, filter, and o-rings, drain and replace front shock fluid, I think ill bleed the brake lines, replace air filters, replace fuel line and filter, put it all back together, and hopefully :bike:!

Links are dead.... try uploading them using the paperclip button on the "Go Advanced" thread option or upload them to photo bucket

WD-40 and a rag works very well in this area finished up with a sponge and mild dishsoap...

levdir are you running a mac system? what kinda of muffler/s do you have? Also did they come with the mounting hardware?thanks

The header's off a 1993 Suzuki GS500 and the muffler's one of these. They're connected with a 2" ID to 1 3/4" OD step-down adapter. The muffler comes with an adjustable mounting arm that I am bolting to the center stand bracket. I have a bike lift so losing the center stand isn't a huge deal. The header requires three stacked exhaust gaskets in the exhaust port and I'm still not sure if it'll seal super well. Fingers crossed.

Can you make a vidieo of what they sound like? The off a 1993 Suzuki GS500 what kind o0f mods did you have to do?Im very intrigued about this exhaust system? My mufflers are off a 2007 HD soft tail. They are kinda quiet except theres a 1 inch hole in the front of the muffler that was connect to cat.I had them plugged off but Im getting used to how the exhaust sounds with them open.:)

I road it like it was meant to be ridden,I built some high rpms like between 6-7k before shifting and got it up to the fastest I ever road it 75mph.:yikes::thumbsup:BTW thanks for specdog wherever he is now days for the windshield it works out great.

Well that's convenient ... it just so happens I ordered two of those very same mufflers a couple days ago - should have them mounted by Friday. I've kept the stock single pipes as I already wrapped them and they turned out very well. I've never actually made a youtube video ... so for the listening ears of those out there, I'll try to figure that out either before or after I return from my western U.S. vacation.

Cheers!

I found a set on ebay for less than $200 Im pretty sure Im going to buy them. They look totally awesome. Now you said bending do you mean you had to change the bend where they are bent and what about the center pipe does your set have it?

Nothing except grinding the bolt holes on the collars out a little and a bit of bending to get them to seat.

And re: sound, I will once she's running again. I'm still without a useable gas tank until I nail down a seat pan solution because I don't want to put gas in it until it's sealed with 2K clear, which I want to save until I have paint on my seat pan (which I don't have yet).

Took a grinder cutting disk to my mufflers. Removed the remains of the rusted out baffles.
Will be buying baffles to fit inside or having something made up.
