While tracing wiring and installing missing connectors I encountered this in a schematic, If you trace the wiring of the main switch to the first connector the red line goes to a blue connector line and vice versa. If you trace the line that is labeled as red to the tailight it again becomes blue. Should I assume that this is a mistake in the schematic and the blue wire goes to the blue connector? The ignition switch was missing connectors as was the headlight. Can I use any yellow lead as the lead to go to a headlight? Thanks for the help, I am seeing double after tracing things

I love the way your diagram lists the colors and layout of all the connectors - would you consider posting a pic of the whole thing? maybe here: http://www.xs400.com/threads/yamaha-xs400-wiring-diagrams.4466/ Would extra appreciate it because I have a 1980 too!

Sorry I can't help with your question - will be watching for answers though as I see a major rewire in my future.
The wiring diagram I used is from the Haynes Manual which is also available in the resources here. here is one from a 1981G...it should be very similar

What are you trying to figure out?

I just tore apart the 80 that I picked up and the harness is perfect........one reason I am hoping to keep it and use it on the build, I pretty much only took things apart in the bucket and left everything else attached.

The bike I am working now did not have any rt side controls. I bought an after market combination and traced the wires on it and now I need to discern where the should go the harness. It would appear someone cut several connectors or the bike, including headlamp and ignition switch. I am half tempted to yank it all back out and rewire from scratch but don't like the expenditure, I am very close to finishing this one up after I sort this issue out. I am trying to decide what wire to use for headlight power( headlight was gone from the bike I bought a replacement) and I encountered the discrepancy in the schematic at the first connection of the ignition ( which I am also replacing)

They don't go back in as easy as they come out!!!o_O:eek::(

Ok so you need the controls then? Let me know and will look tonight. Just heading out for the day of work.........sucks was off yesterday.

Oh the harness should be a little lighter going back in......may make this bike a kick only as every time I would start it the past week it would take forever with the starter........first to second kick every time I tried that way.

I don't need the controls I have new ones already. I also might make this kick only- now that I can fix the kickstarter

hey Pete i lost all ignition last night I just realized I dont have a fuse box and it was all kind of hacked wired as I was moving things around trying to find my charging problem I tried a different rectifier try testing the voltage regulator. after I tried to test the voltage regulator I shut the bike off and when I tried to start it again I lost igniton any ideas I am not to good with the electrics trying to learn in the process

Well, not knowing anything at all about your bike, I would say to first go back and recheck what you just did while testing components. Believe me, there so many people on this forum that are WAY better at the electrical system than I am, but this is what I would do if it were me. Are the connections all good, did you maybe blow a fuse while testing? If your motorcycle was running before your changed components, and it isn't now, I would always go back to the beginning. Also, you don't mention why you were checking your charging system, was it not functioning properly? Lastly, what state was the battery in, does it need to be put on a charger and brought back to full charge? Is the battery even still good and will it accept a full charge.
I am not saying that any of these things are the definite cause of your failure, but it will give you a logical place to start. Many of us have encountered the same botched and buggered wiring on these old bikes. My feeling is I try not to be the previous owner the next will blame, I try to restore the system first to as close to its original state as I can. Good luck, go backwards and retrace your steps of what you have done already and I believe you will find the answer
