    Kick starter doesn't always engage

I have a (maybe dumb) question. When removing the plate (cover) for the kickstart mechanism, does the oil have to be drained first? I guess I'd find out when loosening the bolts...

    clutch replacement

I was out for a ride this afternoon and during a shift, the clutch cable broke up in the lever assembly. Nice thing about this bike that I noticed, is that you don't always have to use the clutch to shift. I noticed it downshifing once. Forgot to use the clutch and geared down by accident. It...

78 xs400 stalls at idle when warm

It could be that they've been replaced at some time. Yes, they are on top, recessed. But since I just got it a few months ago and the previous owner wasn't to free with any information, I wouldn't know. Thanks for the advice though. Are the 1979 carbs different? Where are the Idle Mix screws on...

78 xs400 stalls at idle when warm

...and then what happens if one pops out along the road and falls off of the Bike? I was lucky to find the one that fell out at work and decided that I would not take the chance of it falling off in an uncontrolled environment. If it came out during a ride, I'd be screwed. Why it came out, I'm...

78 xs400 stalls at idle when warm

I don't know what the actual turn count was the other day, but rode to work, and at noon went to start it. It backfired once, and next I saw the Idle Screw on the motor. I had to loosen the tank so I could screw it in a bit to get it started and go home. Later, I took the tank off again and...

I think Oil Galleries are clogged.

Thanks everyone!!! I've got about maybe 50-60 Miles on it now (Just over 100k). Mileage wasn't good (40 mpg), but I assume that's from not being able to idle and revving it a lot, to keep it going, while stopped. Took it for a 10 Mile highway run and at around 50mph, speed seemed to be steady...

78 xs400 stalls at idle when warm

Thanks xchris! I removed them(idle mix), cleaned with acetone along with q-tips in the holes. It idles now with about 3 turns out. Temperature changes seem to affect the idle, but it's now manageable. Much better!!!

78 xs400 stalls at idle when warm

Sorry, I meant to say Idle Mix Screws. Will this change as the engine is run and the crud works through the oil chamber, say in a hundred miles or so of driving? It seems to improve a but every time I take it out. I will remove and inspect them. Thanks!

    Tell-On-Yourself Thread

Actually, my kill switch sort of fell appart and I ended up hooking the wires together as a temnporary fix. Then I found a low profile normally closed pushbutton switch. Now I know which way is kill. (Pressed). I was confused with the old one till the first time it started. Anyway, sometimes...

78 xs400 stalls at idle when warm

I don't know if mine falls into this category but, same thing, cold, seems to idle ok and rpms go up as it warms up. Then when choke is all the way off, will stall if I don't tweak the idle screw. Trouble is, I tweak it, it idles for a bit then if I rev it once the idle climbs and engine races...

    Anyone with straightpipe+baffle experience??

I'm wondering how then, there can be back pressure when the baffle is simply two pipes welded together routing exhaust from one direction into a zig zag pattern with nothing to restrict it. Besides, I can't believe Yamaha would sell a new bike that had a sound like straight pipes. Wouldn't pass...

    Anyone with straightpipe+baffle experience??

I'm just wondering.... I have a restored XS400 that had been sitting a long time and also took a long time to get going. LOL. Anyway, I removed the baffle on one side and the other side (Of course) is stuck. But my question is, was there ever fiberglass around the baffles in the stock model? I...

I think Oil Galleries are clogged.

Thanks! I am hoping for that. I put diesel (about 1/2 Litre) in with the oil and ran it a bit. That's when a whole lot of crap came out. Then changed the oil again and added an upper cylinder, seal fixer additive. Well, it went from puffing blue one one side to clean exhaust after about 15...

I think Oil Galleries are clogged.

Where did I say I ran it without mufflers and filters? Anyway, mufflers are in place and filters are on. But I did notice when filters were off that it did backfire more. And still, nobody comments about the oil. The clean oil on the right, but dirty out of the drain plug and left side. I'm sure...

I think Oil Galleries are clogged.

Thanks for the advice. Changed coils and it helped but still had to sync the carbs. After all that it runs much better but can't get it to idle for very long. Had the carbs out 6 times, cleaning, and I've added injector/carb cleaner into the gas tank. I am assuming this will help over time. I am...

Grrr batteries and other general morning evil bike syndrome!

It was about $70.00 with all taxes here in BC and theres two shelves of RV batteries in the Walmart battery display. I picked the 12AH one from the right side which I think was the cheaper of the two. It was also closer to the battery box size than the old one I had.

Grrr batteries and other general morning evil bike syndrome!

Yea, I wouldn't worry about it. 5 Seconds in reverse won't damage the battery. Just charge it normally observing proper polarity and you should be good to go. On that note, I had purchased a 14AH battery before and after a while it just didn't want to turn over the starter as I was using a...

Grrr batteries and other general morning evil bike syndrome!

Yea. I just went out to my bike in th garage, and measured crankcase temp at 43 degrees F. Put charger on and cranked it over, slow. Was cranking at 36 Amps. Battery cables are new. They were very bad before. Someone spliced them with bolts and lots of black tape! Oh yea, and all it did was...

I think Oil Galleries are clogged.

Yea. I tested the coils again and found that one was intermittent. Up to 200k and back to about 30k. I have some new ones coming. I'll be working on the wiring soon while I wait for the coils. I didn't think a bad coil could cause backfiring, but I guess anything is possible. I have until April...
