XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

Hey Merlin, My understanding of the YICS system is that it is sort of secondary. .it's an auxiliary chamber for supposedly helping to fill the charge of the main combustion chamber. Anythings possible but I don't think there's really any ports to get clogged. Wish I was of more help but I'm no...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

Well it's been a while but I finally feel like working on this again. Got the carb out and started figuring out what all is needed. I think I'm looking at two float bowl gaskets, a handful of screws to replace the ones that rusted out, and some bigger jets to accommodate some pod filters and a...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

Happy to help! So I'm doing the valve adjustments now. This is tedious especially when you don't have any clearance on any of the valves. Luckily the local shop (Crossroads Cycle in Bailey's Crossroads, VA) was kind enough to lend me a couple shim sizes. Otherwise you have to go buy a kit with...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

I think if this were my own bike I would splurge on a bolt kit. Since it isn't I ordered through Fastenal just what I needed. Total was $25. Not much of a savings I know. I decided to measure the valve clearances and I can't get a 0.0015" feeler gauge under any of the 4 valves. I used the zip...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

I have two of those screws here and I measure them 70mm long. 570mm = 57cm ;) Not 5.7. I'm tempted to just order through Fastenal. It'll be cheaper for me since I'm not replacing the valve cover screws, those are already allen head I believe and are probably going to get painted.

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

As I get closer to putting the covers back on I realized I need to get new cover fasteners. I found a tip online that seems to apply to most any Japanese motorcycle. In the microfiche if you look at any fastener, like this one: It's #22 for the Clutch cover. Then go down to the parts list...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

I forgot to mention use common sense when working on this or any engine. Don't install seals dry, use grease or oil..on clean surfaces or you'll be replacing them soon. If this is your first time in an engine take it slow, watch/read as much as you can. I skipped over some basic stuff that a...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

I only used gasket sealer on the cases (Permatex motoseal) everywhere else used new gaskets on clean surfaces. To clean the cylinders of gasket residue for this engine walnut blasting was a must. Even then quite a bit was left behind and against my better judgement I used a razor blade and a...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

Go ahead and slide your valve tappets/cups into their bores with oil, if you can. I recall when I took mine out they were free moving. Going back in they did not want to go. That's how tight the fit was. Maybe try throwing them in the freezer for an hour before you try. Then you put your timing...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

Ha the threat of not finishing the post and all the silent watchers come out of the woodwork. So I left off with the head needing to be assembled. I used a deep socket (I forget size, just be sure whatever you use only contacts outside of valve stem seal) and extension to push the valve seals...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

Project has been on the back burner a bit as I waited for stuff to come in. I can upload the step by step if someone chimes in they'd like to see them but this is where it sits now: Heads fully assembled with lapped valves and new valve seals, cams are in and timed properly, tensioners...

Can someone verify my valve timing?

Thanks guys. I redid the intake i think it looks better now

Can someone verify my valve timing?

First off a question: my crankshaft wants to roll past the TDC timing mark due to the valve springs acting on the camshafts. Normal? To get it to true TDC I have to approach it with a spanner and hold it in place when this happens. After I remove the spanner it continues to move a bit. '82/'82...

Stumped. Maxim 400 DOHC starter oil seal.

Well I decided to just mic the seal. It's 15mm x 25mm x 6mm, with a hard casing. After some reading you can apparently use a thinner oil seal with a rubber casing interchangeably. AVX Seals carries a 15mm x 25mm x 5mm Double Lip w/ garter spring. $4 shipped to my door. I might have to try...

Stumped. Maxim 400 DOHC starter oil seal.

I'm having zero luck locating an oil seal between the starter housing and the engine. The one I removed has some markings but they're not legible. It's not labeled on the parts schematic. I tried searching "Mitsbua SM-7" which is the starter PN on eBay and Google. Has anyone had to replace this...

Are valve seals relatively easy to seat?

I did note the raised strip and groove. My question was more along the lines of I was expecting to feel something give when seating the seal into the groove and I didn't get that. I started off gently tapping one of the seals, then I hit it pretty hard a couple times (only on the metal shell...

Are valve seals relatively easy to seat?

Never having done valve seals before I expected them to take some force to seat on my DOHC '82 Maxim. I read you can hear them click into place on some engines. Using the valve stem as a guide, oiled up seal, and a 11mm socket with extension as a driver (only contacts metal portion of seal), I...

XS400J Maxim 82/83 DOHC engine rebuild

When I cleaned the cylinders I didn't know what these chambers were for. .apparently it's Yamaha's YICS (Yamaha Induction Control System). Sounds cool, here's more info on it: http://xjbikes.wikidot.com/yics . They had a bunch of gunk in them so I soaked them in carb cleaner: First time...
