Any way to test the starter and alternator on a bike that won't start?

Would I need a multimeter for this or is there any good ways to check without one if this is the root cause of a starting issue?

Running out of ideas on getting the Maxim to work ):

Yeah I never had to have the stand up, clutch pulled in or neutral on to start it up before. Where would the relay switch be on the 1083 Maxim and any ideas on how to test this without a multimeter at hand?

Running out of ideas on getting the Maxim to work ):

Yeah so it's been a few months now and I've spent a considerable amount of time and money trying to get my 83' Maxim 400 on the road. I've spent maybe 10 minutes riding it and the rest of the time trying to repair things that go wrong (and this was a bike that was in good shape when I purchased...

Wanted - Anyone parting out on an 83 XS?

Oh sorry about that, thanks for moving it over. Hmm I think it's just the exhaust collector that sits under the bike, there's a small hole/rust in it and I can hear a bit of popping. The brake spring is a huge priority actually if you have one

Tips on setting idle screw correctly?

Just wondering if anyone has concrete steps for setting this screw? I've been twiddling with it a bit and can't get the correct setting it seems. Ideally, I'd want it to be set so the bike won't stall when idling but doesn't inch forward when idling either. Any tips for this?

Few questions on idle and exhust collector...

So I notice that even when I'm not giving the throttle any movement, the bike still moves forward a little bit. But when I lower the idle screw to the absolute bottom, the bike won't start as the butterfly valve is closed. Is there a way to strike a balance and have the bike start everytime but...

Fixing scratches and a deep dent in gas tank - best product?

Ok thanks. Do I have to get primer though? I was just going to plug the hole with the patch, cover it with body putty and then paint over it

Fixing scratches and a deep dent in gas tank - best product?

So I bought some products to fill the small ding and scratches in the gas tank (it's a pretty deep dent but didn't puncture into the tank) Just wanted advice on the best one to use... 1. I have the option of using Bondo Glazing and soft putty to fill the hole and then paint over it and...

    1983 Yamaha Maxim Xs400 won't rev?

yeah so cleaned out the carbs again and checked for leaks everywhere - couldn't find anything besides a slight leak in one of the exhaust manifolds (ordered a new gasket to cover this up). Re-tightened all connections and boots as well. Everything is fine on the bike except the throttle...

    1983 Yamaha Maxim Xs400 won't rev?

Do you think the bike is safe to ride this way? I know it doesn't come across well in the audio, but when I first got the bike there was immediate response on the rpms when I revved the throttle. Now, I'll rev it in neutral and it will take a seocnd or two to register on the rpms or get any...
