hey guys I have a 1980 Yamaha XS400 and I found a good 1979 Yamaha XS400 are the parts comparable ? Can I take parts off the 79 and throw them on the 80

Depends on what model 79 it is. The 80 has electronic ignition and uses some other different parts but with your 80 so hacked up I don't think it really matters. You will have a lot of challenges with such a bike as stock parts and setups will be different than what your bike can take now. Post pics of the 79 so we can see what it is.

Yeah absolutely. There are a few differences like Chris said. I've got an 81 and 78. there are subtle differences but the main ones are the carbs and ignitions. they're really simple bikes though. I've got the 81 engine in the 78 right now.

It’s the 1979 XS400F

Looks all hacked up also..... The 79 and 80 motor are the same less the ignition. Carbs are 34mm but use different internals. Because the 79 has mag disc wheels they would only work if you moved everything to the 80 bike. This means swingarm, forks and you would have to make brackets for the rear master cylinder. I would look for a bike that has not seen any "mod work". Starting with a stock bike makes it a lot easier. It's getting hard to find one that fits that bill anymore. Most of the mod bikes where done poorly with little to no knowledge of what should be done. That's what makes the "cheap".

That's what I would do. Its in better shape plus you'll have discs all around. You could always swap the ignition if you don't want points. Both of my xs' were far worse than that starting out and I wouldn't have it any other way as I was buying them with the intention to heavily modify anyway. Feels better knowing I'm saving a junk bike from death and fixing all the past mistakes at the same time, rather than chopping up a nice stock vintage bike. But maybe that's just me?
