well guy's gotta say I love this site ! It got motivated to chop my bike . I have an 78 xs 400 bobber that I lowered and did some custom stuff to it but didn't chop it. So now I'm working on a 80 xs 400 and I'm going hardtail this time. I've stretched it out 9 inches so far because I'm a fairly tall guy. Right now she sits roughly 3.5 inches off the ground and I'm diggin it. Here's some pics of my progress so far . I put front forks and handle bars on it and kinda placed the rear tire in place to get my ride height before I weld the frame solid.

Its his bike let him do what he wants with it. It just make my factory original bike worth that much more:wink2:

First of all I was joking and 2cnd I didn't say I don't like hard tails if they are done correctly. This particular bike just doesn't look right and I know the builder probably isn't finished making the frame either. Then the back end look too long and the wish bone doesn't sit high enough. Its just my opinion not a knock of your build:wink2: I just have a different vision of how it should look.:wink2:Also a mini bike frame chop and mock build will give the builder some insight and help with direction of the build before doing something wrong on the final build.:wink2:

Well guy's thanx for the input good and bad , I like both opinions. First of all I got the dims. from a harley wheel base . The reason being is that I'm tall, I heard from another guy from this site that I don't want to look like a monster on a bicycle lol! I could've bought a pre-welded hard tail kit but I like to learn from practical experience ,just my preference . So far the stretch fits me my seat sits right in front of the rear tire , I thought about doing a 12 inch stretch but I didn't want to put a chain tentioner just don't like the look. As I put the frame together I'll post pics of the progress . I will say that I've put together custom cars together for some time but these bikes surely have a different set of rules!

It's been a long day of cutting and grinding but it sits on it;s own wheels for the first time!
Next is bracing and welding it solid.

I wish I had seen this thread when you first posted. I would have suggested some larger diameter tubing for that back end, unless you have some plan to reinforce it.

Thats' what I'm doing today is bracing and welding it solid . The last post was seeing what the ride height was like and if it was comfy for me .

So far I put bracing in the frame ,haven't welded it solid yet wanna make sure everything is in place and square . I only want to weld the frame once. So next is setting the brakes up and placing the kickstand. Does it matter what angle the pan hard bar for the brakes sit at in relation to the frame and brake pedal setup? I also placed spider webs by the rear axle to get a good visual, if I do weld the webs by the axle I'll weld them up as a gusset .
So if anyone has opinions to help out good or bad I would like to hear them . Thanx

I like the long low look of the bike and the braces you put in work with it to make it look stronger without taking away from the look I'm not a fan of the spider web in my opinion it is to big and takes away from the bike if it was small enough to fit inside the frame in the first section it might look better
