So, I changed my oil.

My (donut shaped) oil filter has a flat side and a dimpled side. Which way is it supposed to fit in?

My buddy was saying dimple side DOWN, flat side UP.

I had already installed it though ... dimple side UP.

Is this a big deal? Do I need to change out my oil again and reposition the filter?

The flat side of the filter is pressed against the engine block. The dimpled side of the filter is directed towards the filter cover. There is a picture in the xs400 manual part 2 available for download from this website.

I have the manual but failed to locate such a description.

I guess I'll be cracking it open (again) and fixing the mistake.

As for the spring ... there WASN'T one in there.

Edit: without any sort of spring, am I in trouble?

It would seem that my model doesn't use a spring.

If you visit this link (xs400j, near identical to my bike) and select engine/exhaust ... then "oil filter", the diagram makes no mention of any spring anywhere. My belief is that the oil filter is housed in an area that is only big enough for it to fit, so the use of a spring is null.

I could be wrong, though. I'm just goin' with what I see there.

Nice. Thanks, Drewpy!

So, am I right? No spring, as far as I can tell.

The drawing of the oil filter itself leaves much to be desired LOL ... that's how I ended up in this situation in the first place ;)
