81 Hardtail "Roseanne"

Well now comes time to put all the components on and see what I did wrong. Soo far not to bad but im having a hell of a time getting the rear wheel spaced correctly so the sprockets line up. If i just space the wheel over it moves it way away from the center of the bike (due to the fact that stock XS400s have the motor offset to the left and mine is centered in the BSA frame). Once I get my alignment figured out I can build mounts for the rear fender and finalize the brake linkages. Here are some pics with the motor in forks on, tank, seat, and bars.

Here are a couple pics of the motor re-ringed and painted/polished. Carbs are currently being re-built by gentlemanjim.

Well I havent updated on here in awhile but thats only because I havent gotten a whole lot done. I had the carbs rebuilt, respoked the rims and polished the hubs and brakes, and sent them to the best bike shop in my region to be trued and have new tires mounted. I am also getting some prices on a custom 2 tone paint job and all the associated body work (have painted several cars and hate it enough to pay out the ass to not deal with it again). I also made a new purchase that makes me happy and pisses off the old lady but what the hell........

the blue is a protective coating from the tire factory to save the white untill the customer gets the products.

By the way, the bike is coming along nicely. Great Job

How did you prep the motor for paint? I still have not come up with a really good way to clean between the fins.

The bike is looking classy! Keep it up!

Thanks for the compliments guys. To prep the motor I scrubbed the whole thing with gasoline and a long handled brush. I then repeated the process with another brush and brake parts cleaner then used the brake cleaner to run all the risidual grease and dirt off. Its a messy and dangerous process so I recommend doing it outside. I have used every kind of degreaser and cleaner on the shelves and the best is still gasoline (its also the cheapest).

Interesting; I also found that stuff like Brakleen worked fat better than normal degreasers. I will have to give the gasoline thing a try.

Well here are the last pics before I send everything to paint, I see the end of this project in sight... Until it needs something else of course.
