Alternator Cover

On the 1980 xs400 special, do I need to drain the oil to take off the alt cover? Tx alot have a great day!

no, just ensure its on the main stand

Also, I just want to get the starter out so I can either salvage it or replace it. Can I only take off the alt cover? Or, do I have to take off the cover behind it also?

If its on the centerstand only a few drops of oil will come out.Otherwise you will lose alot more.
