hey guys, i have 1980 xs400 that's been sitting in the shed for a while that i want to get running. i'd like to run a smaller battery and go kick only. wanted to see if anybody's using something like this in their's. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0053TR7B8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A24FJG9QJIEUE2
it looks like a knock off of a yuasa model which i think i've seen used around here http://www.yuasabatteries.com/battery.php?bID=B3&vID=7418, and i'll probably upgrade to eventually if this thing seems of shitty quality. but in the meantime i'd just like to get her running and mock some things up. i'm just not real clear on charging rates and such and i don't want to blow it up. any advice would be helpful

A good rule of thumb on charging rates is the battery capacity divided by five. It looks like the one you linked to is 2.3Ah, so it can handle 0.46 Amps continuously for a while. This shouldn't be a problem on the bike, since the charging system would have to put out about 14V in order to charge a battery in good condition (lets say 12.5V at open circuit) faster than that even with no other electronics on the bike.
The manual recommends an 8Ah battery for this bike, but lots of people seem to be using much smaller ones than that. Some people have even used those cordless drill batteries to run the bike!

I am using a 1.3ah in my 80 tracker and after a few hundred miles it still works fine.
