So I bought this bike for dirt cheap and want to fix it up for next spring. I'm thinking its a 1978 XS400. But I figured I'd ask the experts here to give me a more clear answer. Pics incoming. Vin is 2L0-006118

Thanks and I look forward to getting to know you all better as I get this ride fixed up and running.

One way to find out if its an 80 or newer would be to take the cover off the top of the engine on the left side of the bike.If theres a tci unit it will be there. The bike looks looks newer than the a 78.I tryed running your serial number last night on the site that we use but it was offline and not working. My guess is its 80-81 model. Also the 78 would have spoked wheels correct?

Here is what makes me say its a 78. Hopefully the picture is clear is enough. And I appreciate the warm welcome and help so far. I really hope to have something to ride come spring. I know it will be a lot of work, but I don't think its an unrealistic goal.

Chris the pics of the 78 is what through me off because I thought the 78 had the boxy style tank not the round style like on the newer models.Since you have been informitive of letting us know that there are 2 different 78 e models that clears it up.:)

Google yamaha xs400 and see all the styles that where made of them, they are many:wink2:

Its the warping behind the spring that worries me. Assuming I have to replace the whole assembly, anyone have any ideas on what the wallet hit would be? Also what is the metal peg thats welded into place there? Again I appreciate all the help.

should be able to bend the chain guard back into shape fairly easily... the only reason I can see for the post is a relacement passenger fort peg. ??

Its a bad angle, but if you look below the chain guard the gear and housing are bent as well. Not sure what caused it, but its not pretty looking haha.

From what i can see you'll need a rear sproket (the gear) about 20 bucks and a chain adjuster the little chrome piece with the bolt going threw it on the end of the swing arm also 20 bucks. You can get both on ebay.

Look like the bolt is there to keep the axle from moving:yikes: You need to replace all of that stuff back there its not safe at all. Looks like the bike was hit.
