Can anybody tell me what this part is?!?!?

Hi all,

A buddy of mine has a 1982 XS400 J that has been taken apart to attend to a bent/stuck exhaust valve and lost compression.

I am helping him put it back together and can not figure out what this part is!!!

Somebody please help!!

At first I thought it was a clip associated with the cam chain tensioners somehow but it doesnt seem like it after looking through all the schematics. I am starting to wonder now if its some kind of cable retaining clip that maybe goes on the outside of the motor somewhere.
I am hoping one of you will know exactly what it is.

I have the same bike/engine, but I can't figure it out either...and I don't really want to tear apart my engine to figure it out

Honestly that looks like belt clip for a framing square of some sort........ although that is a small clip. I'm certain that I does not belong to the bike.
